For Real Lives Mamma?

Have you ever thought "am I the only one"? Well I sure have. I wonder, am I the only one that has to peal an athletic cup out of last nights lacrosse gear, am I the only one that finds latex gloves when cleaning out my car, am I the only one who has a child with a complete booger wall? I am here to say, humor comes AFTER the dust settles and I am keeping it real. As my daughter asks "for real lives mamma", yes FOR REAL LIVES people.

I confess: I HATE SPIRIT WEEK

I confess:  Ok people I am keeping it real.  I HATE SPIRIT WEEK!  I was a cheerleader through  grade school and high school, my daughters cheer, heck I made up a cheer to get my kids to pee in the potty….. "out of my body, into the potty, go pee pee go (clap)".  I am all about supporting the team and having spirit.  BUT why oh why do we have to create crazy costumes for our kids EVERY.DARN.DAY of this week.  Seriously?  Favorite book character?  Jeans day is stressful, my kids do not like jeans, they are "scratchy" and uncomfortable.  To top it off, the shirt MUST be a school spirit shirt.  Now let me check my wallet so we all can run to the spirit shop this morning on our way into school. Oops, I never carry cash.  Decade day?  Yep, let's just wear our play clothes and be from THIS decade.  Super hero?  I am a SAHM of 5, I think I will stay in my yoga pants being the super hero I am.  I believe my kids are all their own individual super heroes too.  Ok, ok, I know, it is for the kids.  But what about the kids that don't like it either.  They have to set the alarm to get up early to make sure the costume looks good, that it will stay attached and in place for the entire day, that they will be able to go to the bathroom at some point, that they can still play "puppy dog" at recess.  So now what…..I tell my kids, who cares, you don't HAVE to participate.  What child wants to stick out like that, being one of the ONLY ones that "forgot it was spirit week".  So off we go to Hobby Lobby to design the worlds best Junie B Jones look a like.  (I only have 4 more to go.) It is a stressful week and I will be happy when it is over and I can move on to Halloween.

PS just as I finished writing this, I see a friend on Facebook asking "how do I dress my kids like they are stranded on a desert island?"

  1. Cyndi - I so relate to your post. Although Aryn doesn't have spirit week, we've had weird hat day, crazy hair day, superhero day, etc. Each one comes with a trip to Goodwill or some other store. Sometimes I want to tackle the people that come up with these ideas...I think they don't have children!
